St. John Ambulance Review Handed To Government

Northern Territory Government is delivering high quality health services with an independent review into St. John Ambulance completed.

Minister for Health Natasha Fyles commissioned the Review of Road Ambulance Services in the Northern Territory earlier this year to ensure Territorians have the best possible service into the future.

“St. John Ambulance offers provide a vital service, looking after vulnerable Territorians in often challenging circumstances; and have done so for over 20 years.” Minister Fyles said.

“I have listened to concerns around the future direction of the service and I’ve taken action.”

Minister Fyles said Independent consultant, Professor Neale Fong, was engaged to undertake the review and has handed his final report to government.

“Review found the Northern Territory Road Ambulance Services is functioning satisfactorily, but needs improvements to move to a new stage of performance excellence.” Minister Fyles said.

Report makes 44 recommendations to address issues relating to:

  • Contemporary best practice in the delivery of road ambulance services;
  • Future workforce requirements for a contemporary road ambulance service including the training, development and retention of the ambulance service workforce;
  • Interface between road ambulance services and other health related emergency services;
  • Future regulation of road ambulance services in the Northern Territory.

Report does not recommend bringing the management of the road ambulance services under the Department of Health.

Minister Fyles has requested that the Department of Health formulate a detailed response to the Review with the on-going input and support of key stakeholders.

“A detailed response is due to me early February 2018.” Minister Fyles said.

A new contract with St. John Ambulance Australia (NT) for the provision of ambulance services was executed on 1 February 2016, for a 5 year period with an option of a further 5 years.
