A Victorian Liberal Nationals Coalition Government will establish an annual Indigenous Honour Roll to pay tribute to Indigenous Victorians who have contributed at the Local, State, or National Level, Shadow Minister for Aboriginal Affairs Jeanette Powell announced today.

Speaking at a Reconciliation Forum in Melbourne today, Mrs. Powell said a Coalition Government would establish the honour roll to ensure Indigenous Victorians who deserved recognition would receive it, with their names published on the annual Honour Roll.

“The Coalition will establish a Panel of Indigenous and Non-Indigenous Representatives from across Victoria to select recipients from nominations of Indigenous Victorians who have made a significant contribution to their community or further afield.” Mrs. Powell said.

“Names added to the honour roll will be published on the Aboriginal Affairs Victoria website, with the honour roll itself being on display at Parliament House.”

“The Coalition understands the importance of recognising Indigenous Victorians who work tirelessly on behalf of their community and beyond, and who must overcome challenges along the way.”

Mrs. Powell said the efforts of worthy recipients often went unnoticed or undervalued.

“There are many indigenous leaders and unsung heroes who have worked tirelessly over many years to end the disadvantage and discrimination experienced by many Indigenous Victorians.” Mrs. Powell said.

“These people are role models who have promoted reconciliation, respect and understanding in an effort to improve the lives of Indigenous Victorians.”

Mrs. Powell said the Coalition would help ensure Indigenous people had the opportunity to reach their full potential.

“Premier John Brumby has not gone far enough to acknowledge the contributions made by our Indigenous Victorians and so the Coalition will rectify that by having a lasting recognition with an Honour Roll.” Mrs. Powell said.

“There are many Indigenous Victorians who deserve to be recognised and the honour roll will be a positive way to identify them and pay tribute to their outstanding work.” Mrs. Powell said.
