Middle Years Project Supports Literacy And Numeracy Outcomes

Victor P Taffa

Hodgman Government has a long term plan to improve educational outcomes and ensure every Tasmanian student can look forward to a brighter future, Minister for Education and Training Jeremy Rockliff said.

“With the budget back on track, we are able to invest more in priority areas such as education.” Mr. Rockliff said.

“This year we are introducing a Middle Years Project which will provide additional literacy and numeracy support for schools. This is in addition to our 2014 commitment of an additional 25 literacy and numeracy specialist teachers in schools, and builds on progress made last year in language and literacy outcomes for our younger students following stronger NAPLAN (National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy) results.”

Funding for this project will establish four associations, each receiving a grant of $157,000 (see Appendix).

This funding will allow them to drive improved teaching practices, working in partnership with the Literacy and Numeracy Team in Curriculum Services to improve learning outcomes for their students.

Literacy and numeracy are foundation skills for life and learning, and initiatives such as these will help ensure we reach our goal of leading the nation in education and create a job-ready generation of young Tasmanians.

“While the Hodgman Government is proud of recent improvements in education, we will continue to progress the structural change and targeted investment necessary to give every Tasmanian a better education and greater opportunity in life.” Mr. Rockliff said.
