Revitalising The Darwin CBD – A New Plan For Housing Health
Victor P Taffa
Gunner Territory Government has today announced that it will undertake a new public tender process for the lease of 10,000 sqm of office accommodation for the Department of Health in the Darwin CBD (Central Business District).
Public tender process will be advertised in March 2017 and is open to anyone who would like to submit a proposal, with the lease to commence in mid-2021 for a term of 15 years.
Minister for Corporate Information Services Lauren Moss said an open and transparent process would ensure everyone had an equal opportunity to contribute a proposal.
“Department of Health staff is currently located across multiple sites and there is a need to bring them together to create a functional and streamlined system.” Ms. Moss said.
“The process run by the CLP (Country Liberal Party) Government was not focused and was done without any clear understanding of what was in the interest of Territorians and the public servants involved.”
“We are now restarting the process and will ensure greater clarity and certainty for potential proponents.”
Along with providing a centralised, long term workplace for most Health Department staff, Ms. Moss also said that the 10,000 sqm office space would support efforts to revitalise the CBD.
“We are particularly interested in attracting proposals for a new building in the CBD in which Health staff could be located.” Ms. Moss said.
“The project will be welcome news to local business in the Darwin CBD and stimulate the Northern Territory economy through construction activity.”
Public tender process will also apply the Northern Territory Government’s ‘Buy Local’ policy, requiring proponents to demonstrate how the construction of commercial office would use Territory enterprises and deliver maximum benefit to the Territory economy.
