Board Opportunities are now open to help drive the future success of Victoria’s vibrant Harness Racing Industry in 2011 and beyond.

Minister for Racing Denis Napthine said expressions of interest are currently being sought from qualified individuals to join the Board of Harness Racing Victoria.

“We are calling on leaders in racing, business and marketing who are committed to leading Victoria’s harness racing industry into the future and ensuring it remains a national leader.” Dr. Napthine said.

“Harness Racing is a major contributor to Victoria’s Racing economy, with 25 Professional Harness Racing Clubs conducting more than 500 Race Meets across 19 tracks in 2010, resulting in a total of nearly $34 Million distributed in Prize Money.”

 

“We are seeking qualified individuals with experience in country racing, breeding, sporting administration, business, government or public relations with fresh ideas and enthusiasm to work with the current Board.” Dr. Napthine said.

There will be a number of vacancies for the Board of Harness Racing Victoria arising during 2011. Members are appointed for a period of up to three years.

“The Racing Industry employs thousands of Victorians and generates more than $2 Billion dollars worth of economic benefit to the state, more than half of which occurs in country areas.” Dr. Napthine said.

“Board Members need an understanding of governance and the energy to provide the industry with solid leadership and direction.”

“This is an excellent opportunity for reinvigoration of the Board of Harness Racing Victoria and I encourage people that would relish this opportunity to register their interest.” Dr. Napthine said.

Harness Racing Victoria is a statutory body established under the Racing Act 1958 with responsibility for the regulation, management and promotion of Harness Racing in Victoria.

Its mission is to develop a vibrant industry that promotes participation, integrity and racing excellence, grows wagering and other revenue streams, maximises returns to stakeholders and ensures the customer experience is Paramount.

The Harness Racing Victoria Board comprises up to seven members (one as Chairperson and one as Deputy Chairperson) all with a range of expertise and experience.

Advertisements seeking expressions of interest will be placed in the racing section of major Metropolitan Newspapers and relevant Industry Publications. Expressions of interest close on 18 March 2011.
