Tasmanian Retail Recession Worsens

In A Disaster for our vital Retail Sector, new ABS figures confirm that sales continue to fall.

“We are in the midst of one of the worst Retail Recessions Tasmania has ever seen and the Labor-Green Government has absolutely no idea how to fix the problems. On trend terms, this is the 13th month in a row where Retail Turnover has fallen.” Shadow Treasurer Peter Gutwein said today.

“Not only are we in a Retail Recession, this is the second year in a row where the usual Christmas boost failed to materialise. For the past two years, December Retail Turnover has been less than November Turnover.”

“Retail Turnover is an indicator of the health of our economy and if these latest figures are anything to go by, our economy is flat lining.” Mr. Gutwein said.

“These figures confirm that the cost of living is really biting and people simply can’t afford to spend.  It also shows that the Labor-Green Government is creating uncertainty in our economy.”

“Unfortunately, retail turnover could get even worse. Premier Lara Giddings has refused to rule out tax increases to fill in the budget black hole that she helped to dig.” Mr. Gutwein said.

“If Tasmanians are hit with another tax increase it would be an absolute catastrophe for our Retail Sector.”

“The Labor-Green Government has absolutely no plan for our economy and has completely failed to deliver for Tasmanian retailers. Today’s figures are just further proof of the damage this Government is doing to our economy.” Mr. Gutwein said.
