Construction work on the $21 Million Glenorchy Health Centre is on track with the project due to be completed in December 2017, Minister for Health Michael Ferguson said.

Latest works to be completed include the installation of a TasNetworks cable and construction of a substation.

Glenorchy Health Centre will deliver more care closer to where people live in the Northern suburbs, meaning better outcomes for patients and relieving pressure on busy Outpatient Clinics at the Royal Hobart Hospital.

Glenorchy Health Centre will offer a range of services including

  • Child health and parenting services,
  • Occupational therapy,
  • Oral health,
  • Pathology,
  • Physiotherapy,
  • Podiatry and social work
  • Renal self-dialysis.

“It will cater for Glenorchy residents as well as serve as a high quality centre for the broader region including Brighton, Derwent Valley and the Central Highlands where these municipalities have the highest needs for chronic conditions.” Mr. Ferguson said.

“Evidence also suggests that there are a high number of emergency presentations and hospital admissions from these catchment areas.”

Glenorchy Health Centre is another great example of the range of important capital projects which are on track to deliver benefits to Tasmanians right across the state, including:

  • $689 Million Royal Hobart Hospital Redevelopment, which has seen patients begin moving into J-Block this week, to allow for B-Block to be demolished,
  • North West Cancer Centre began delivering radiotherapy services in May, meaning that for the first time many cancer patients in the North West will receive radiotherapy treatment close to home,
  • $4 Million Allied Health Clinic redevelopment at the Launceston General Hospital is underway, with the nursing calling system upgrade having commenced in October.

Glenorchy Health Centre is being constructed by Hansen and Yuncken, who were awarded the construction contract in June and have a strong local presence in Tasmania.

“With the state’s finances now under control, the Hodgman Liberal Government has a renewed focus on health and is determined to deliver the health system the community needs and deserves.” Mr. Ferguson said.
