Guide To Help Farmers On The Road To Recovery

Agriculture and Food Minister Terry Redman today released 2011 Planning Ahead: A Guide for your Cropping Program, a comprehensive guide to help Western Australian grain growers prepare for the next season.

Mr. Redman said the guide would be distributed before Christmas to allow growers to examine key decision-making areas underpinning cropping program decisions for 2011.

“2010 delivered one of the driest growing seasons on record, resulting in below-average yields and financial hardship for many famers across the Wheatbelt.” Mr. Redman said.

“During a dry season it is often difficult to start planning and think rationally about the way forward. But now is the time to take stock and look at operational strategies and options for 2011.”

“The 2011 Planning Ahead booklet has been designed to help growers develop a plan to maximise profit from their cropping program during 2011.” Mr. Redman said.

The Guide is part of the Department of Agriculture and Food’s Pathways to Resilience program to support farm businesses to better manage seasonal conditions in areas that receive less than 250 millimetres of growing season rainfall.

Mr. Redman said the department would also host a series of Farm Profit Workshops throughout the regions in February and March 2011 to discuss suggestions and strategies in the guide.

“These Farm Profit Workshops will incorporate the latest developments and technical information relating to next season.” Mr. Redman said.

“Risk management strategies and decision support tools should help growers make better decisions.” Mr. Redman said.
