Forward works to assist with the final design to construct an Esplanade Boardwalk along the Darwin foreshore area will commence on 6 April, 2016.

Lands and Planning Minister David Tollner said the Northern Territory Government has provided $5 Million to build stage 1 of the boardwalk and the geo-technical forward works need to be completed before the design is finalised.

“The geo-technical forward works will take place from 6-20 April and be undertaken from a barge to minimise impact on the foreshore.” Mr. Tollner said.

“These works will result in a small section of the foreshore being temporarily fenced in front of the Deck Chair cinema.”

The temporary closure will re-direct the pedestrian access through Da-moe-ra path and will not completely block the pedestrian pathway from the existing stairway through Deckchair.

A marine construction zone will also be in place around the vessel during the geo-technical forward works.

“Stage 1 of the project will see 400 metres of the Esplanade Boardwalk, starting from behind the Deckchair Cinema site and ending at Lameroo Beach.” Mr. Tollner said.

“The boardwalk is being designed to minimise the impact on the foreshore and will be constructed of concrete, marine grade steel and timber boards.”

“It will also feature a design that will be both robust and blend with the lush tropical coastline providing a walkway for locals and visitors.”

“Shaded lookouts will be positioned along the length of the Esplanade Boardwalk providing historically themed rest stops to highlight Darwin Harbour’s rich history and Indigenous heritage.” Mr. Tollner said.

In the future, the Esplanade Boardwalk has the potential to be extended to Doctors Gully, subject to future budget decisions.
