Attorney-General Martin Pakula today announced the appointment of Dr. Gregory Lyon QC as a judge of the County Court.

Dr. Lyon has served on the Victorian Bar Council and the Victorian Bar Ethics Committee since 2013, and was also Chair of the Committee of the Criminal Bar Association Victoria from 2010 to 2012.

Dr. Lyon completed a thesis on Australia’s insider trading laws at Deakin University in 2003, obtaining a Doctor of Juridical Science, and holds a Bachelor of Jurisprudence and a Bachelor of Laws from Monash University.

He was appointed Senior Counsel in 2005 and Queen’s Counsel in 2014.

“I congratulate Dr. Lyon who has more than 30 years of experience as a lawyer, with 26 years at the Bar.” Attorney-General Martin Pakula said.

“His proficiency in dealing with complex criminal matters, and his skills as an effective advocate will be invaluable in his new role.”

Dr. Lyon has extensive experience in complex criminal matters, white collar crime, occupational health and safety, and regulatory law.

He has appeared as Counsel Assisting the Office of Police Integrity at public hearings into Police corruption allegations and was Senior Counsel for 77 municipal councils and the Municipal Association of Victoria at the Victorian Bushfires Royal Commission.

Dr. Lyon is also an accredited advocacy coach and has worked as an instructor in advocacy workshops at the Leo Cussen Institute and the Australian Advocacy Institute.

He will replace Judge Anthony Howard, who announced his retirement earlier this year.

“I thank Judge Anthony Howard for his many years of dedication and service to the County Court.” Attorney-General Pakula said.
