Disasters Take Their Toll On Public Assets

Minister for Local Government Jeanette Powell today opened the 2011 National Local Government Asset Management conference in Melbourne.

The Minister announced further support for flood affected councils with the Coalition Government funding the Accounting for Natural Disaster Support Program (ANDSP).

The ANDSP is designed to assist rural and regional local councils in the accounting treatment of activities affected by natural disaster.

“This technical support will help councils work through considerably complex issues and is another example of the Coalition Government continuing to assist councils with flood recovery.” Mrs. Powell said.

“Given the recent flood, fire and cyclone damage to vital infrastructure around the nation, this is a timely gathering to discuss improved asset management.”

“Local governments nationally are responsible for $200 Billion worth of public assets including roads, drains, libraries, town halls and parks.”

“All of these assets need to be maintained and most assets need to be periodically repaired and eventually replaced.”

“Improving the management of maintenance, repair and replacement of local government assets will deliver real savings for ratepayers.” Mrs. Powell said.

“The Coalition Government is also assisting councils improve the value for money they receive when purchasing goods and services.”

“The Procurement Excellence Program assists councils develop their professional procurement capability.”

“Every council in Victoria will have completed a detailed procurement road map by June this year to support improved efficiency amongst councils.” Mrs. Powell said.
