The State Government has donated $40,000 to Australian Red Cross on the first day of the charity’s annual Red Cross Calling activity.

Premier Colin Barnett said the donation was made on behalf of all West Australians.

“We have all seen and heard in recent times how Australian Red Cross has been called on to help thousands of people affected by natural disasters right across Australia.” Premier Barnett said.

“Here at home, Red Cross has helped following the Carnarvon floods, the recent tropical cyclones and the devastating bushfires in the Perth Hills.”

“Red Cross has also worked with victims of the floods in Queensland and Victoria, and is assisting in New Zealand following last week’s earthquake.” Premier Barnett said.

Across all emergencies in Australia from December 2010 to February 2011, there have been more than 3,000 Red Cross staff and volunteers working on the disasters.

During March, Red Cross members and community groups will conduct fundraising activities, such as hosting an event or doorknocking in their local communities.

Red Cross Calling is an annual fundraising activity which has been conducted by Red Cross members, community groups, schools and individuals for more than 60 years.

“I urge those in a position to support Red Cross to make a donation this month, no matter how small.” Premier Barnett said.

“Red Cross is always there helping West Australians in our time of need.” Premier Barnett said.
