Primary Industries Minister Bryan Green must immediately rule out any further cuts to our quarantine and biosecurity sector to ensure that Tasmania remains vigilant in protecting our relative pest and disease-free status, Shadow Minister for Fisheries Rene Hidding said today.

“The state’s lucrative rock lobster and abalone industries are being put at risk by a Government that has clearly fallen asleep at the wheel when it comes to biosecurity.”

“The State Government has been aware of the destructive nature of the sea urchin in Tasmanian waters for more than a decade, yet has continually failed to address the issue.” Mr. Hidding said.

“This is just another sign that the Labor-Green Government is not serious about the issue of biosecurity in Tasmania.”

“The Tasmanian Liberals have long been campaigning for a well-resourced biosecurity system and urge the Government to commit to the state’s lucrative aquaculture industry.” Mr. Hidding said.
