As the summer heat continues, the Andrews Government has launched a campaign to help Victorians keep safe during a power outage in bushfires and extreme weather conditions.

Minister for Energy and Resources Lily D’Ambrosio today launched the Your Guide to Power Outages campaign and reiterated the message to stay safe during a power outage.

While Victoria has very reliable electricity supply, power outages can occur particularly during extreme summer weather. The Guide sets out simple tips to prepare for a power outage, including putting together a power outage kit containing:

  • A torch or battery-operated light
  • A phone that doesn’t rely on electricity (such as a fully-charged mobile phone)
  • A battery powered radio for news and updates
  • Fresh water (if you rely on an electric pump for water)
  • The faults and emergencies contact number from your latest electricity bill

“With an earlier start to the fire season and forecasts of more hot conditions, it is vital to be prepared.” Minister for Energy and Resources Lily D’Ambrosio said.

“Your Guide to Power Outages has valuable information to keep you safe and comfortable during an outage.”

Also covered is information on how to be energy safe, including:

  • Keep clear of fallen powerlines and report them to your local energy distributor;
  • Unplug appliances to stop voltage surges to your appliances when the power is restored;
  • Be careful using candles and other open flames for lighting.

“We understand that Victorian communities in rural, regional and peri-urban areas face a high bushfire risk each summer. This Guide is another way to assist and remind residents to be prepared.” Ms. D’Ambrosio said.

Local councils, retailers such as Bunnings and community groups like the Country Women’s Association and the Victorian Farmers Federation are key partners in the campaign.
