A Victorian Liberal Nationals Coalition Government will ease the pressure on Victorian families visiting our zoos by funding free admission for children under 16 to Melbourne Zoo, Healesville Sanctuary and Werribee Open Range Zoo, Coalition Leader Ted Baillieu said today.

“The Coalition’s $10.7 Million Victorian zoos initiative will provide free admission to all children under 16 when zoos and animal sanctuaries are most popular on weekends, public holidays and during school holidays.” Mr. Baillieu said.

“With family budgets under severe pressure from Premier John Brumby’s cost-of-living increases, the Coalition will make it easier for families taking children to the zoo by making entry free during these times.”

“The Melbourne Zoo, the Werribee Open Range Zoo and Healesville Sanctuary are among Victoria’s most popular attractions.”

“The Coalition believes that encouraging families to visit our zoos is a great way for Victorians to appreciate and better understand wildlife conservation and environmental protection.”

“Zoos are great family attractions and provide wonderful educational experiences for both children and adults, but many families are finding their budgets under pressure.”

“The Coalition will make our internationally-renowned zoos and exhibits accessible and affordable for all Victorian families.” Mr. Baillieu said.

Victoria’s three zoos offer a wide variety of experiences to visitors a modern, inner city Melbourne Zoo with a strong focus on conservation and research, an African safari experience at Werribee Open Range Zoo, and interaction with wildlife in a natural habitat at Healesville Sanctuary where the ongoing protection of native species is assured.”

“The Coalition’s Plan will reduce to $0 the $24.80 entrance cost for two children under 16 to Victoria’s zoos and Healesville Sanctuary on weekends, public holidays and school holidays.” Mr. Baillieu said.

“This saving will make a real difference to the family budget for a day out, in contrast to Labor which offers only a few days a year of free admission to Melbourne Zoo to children.”

“The Coalition will ease the pressure on family budgets, not increase it like John Brumby has done, and we want more families to be able to afford to enjoy all our zoos have to offer.” Mr. Baillieu said.
