Premier Colin Barnett today inspected State Government funded upgrading works on Coalfields Highway between Allanson and Collie.

Premier Barnett said work on the section of the highway between the Bibbulmun Track and Collie was now complete.  Work on the section of the road from the Bibbulmun Track to Allanson would be completed by the end of the month.

“The Liberal-National Government has spent $6.5 Million on upgrading a 7.5 km section of the Coalfields Highway between Allanson and Collie.” Premier Barnett said.

“Funding for this has been allocated from our $14 Million commitment in the 2010-11 Budget to upgrade the highway, and plans for the next stage of works from Wellington Dam to Allanson are currently being developed by Main Roads.”

The highway has been widened to provide 3.5 m lane widths in each direction with a 1.5 m sealed shoulder and an additional one metre of unsealed shoulder on each side of the road over a distance of  7.5 km.

“The Coalfields Highway is an important transport link connecting Collie to Perth, Bunbury and other communities in the South-West.” the Premier said.

“The highway caters for a mix of increasing traffic, including heavy vehicles and oversize loads servicing the mining, industrial and agricultural sectors.”

“The improvement of several curves and the realignment of road adjacent to the Collie cemetery will greatly improve road safety on the section of the highway between Allanson and Collie.”

Premier Barnett said the Liberal-National Government recognised the importance of upgrading the Coalfields Highway.

“The last major upgrade was done in the 1990’s.This highway has been neglected for far too long.” Premier Barnett said.

“These current works are part of our ongoing program to improve this road, an issue close to the heart of this community.” Premier Barnett said.
