Friday Arvo Whitewash Of Child Death

The Friday Afternoon Release of a report into the state’s handling of an aboriginal child allegedly killed by its mother was a disgrace, the State Opposition said today.

Shadow Minister for Child Safety Ted Malone said the handling of the report was not just a disgrace, but an attempted whitewash of the situation.

“This is the action of a disgraceful Government.” Mr. Malone said.

“This is the Government that ran to an election calling for a mandate on child safety, but now dumps out a whitewash report on the shabby handling of an aboriginal child on a Friday afternoon when Prince William is on his way.”

“What chance is there for any sort of proper scrutiny …Minister Reeves clearly hopes this report from the Commission for Children will be lost.” Mr. Malone said.

Mr. Malone said the report showed Child Safety (department) failed to initiate an investigation into serious allegations of abuse of the child within the required 10 days.

“Child Safety staff failed to consult and advise the appropriate Indigenous support group as required under law.”

“Once again we see a clear and dangerous breakdown in communication between Queensland Health and Child Safety.” Mr. Malone said.

“This isn’t the first case where child has died and both departments have failed in their duties.”

“Who can forget the New Year’s tragedy on Bribie Island three years ago when a young girl was brutally raped and murdered by her father recently released from mental treatment by Queensland Health?” Mr. Malone asked.

“The Liberal National Party is committed to a root and branch overhaul of child safety and its service delivery. We don’t want excuses we need to ensure that children known to the Department are safe.” Mr. Malone said.
