New Cabinet Line-Up

Chief Minister Adam Giles has reinvigorated his ministerial line-up by bringing in new blood and introducing two new portfolios.

“I’m excited to be welcoming a new Minister into my team with Gary Higgins adding another experienced hand to the line-up.” Mr. Giles said.

Gary Higgins will take on the portfolios of Sport and Recreation, Senior Territorians and the Environment.

“As we work to develop Northern Australia, I want Territorians to have confidence that the protection of our environment and outdoor lifestyle is a government priority. This new standalone Environment Portfolio achieves that.” Mr. Giles said.

“Gary Higgins has been assisting me as Parliamentary Secretary for Northern Australia Development preparing him well for this position. He has a long interest in environmental management, especially in the Daly, and he’ll be a great asset to the team.”

“After listening to long-ignored pleas from veterans groups, I have decided to create the Territory’s first Ministry for Defence Industries and Veterans Support. This portfolio will be headed up by the Deputy Chief Minister and reflects the priority we place on the large local defence community, including veterans and their families. I’m sure this will be warmly welcomed by veterans groups.”

Peter Chandler has also taken on additional responsibility with the key Police, Fire and Emergency Services ministry.

“I am taking on the crucial Tourism portfolio, better aligning it with my other ministries of Asian Engagement and Trade, Economic Development and Major Projects, Northern and Central Australia Development.” Mr. Giles said.

“I’ll also be taking on Arts and Museums with a particular focus on cultural ties with Asia through our Festivals NT program. Gary Higgins will assist me in this Arts role. I will remain as Treasurer.”

“After doing a fantastic job as Health Minister, where she has delivered improved services to patients at clinics and hospitals across the Territory, Robyn Lambley will now bring her skills to Education.”

Robyn Lambley also picks up the Employment and Training portfolio, as well as Corrections.

“I want Minister Elferink to now turn his attention to Health, with the building of the new Palmerston Regional Hospital his number one priority.” Mr. Giles said.

“Mental health has long been an issue that I would like to give more attention and so I have created this as a new standalone ministry with a special focus on young people. This was something raised with me at the Chief Minister’s Youth Roundtable only last weekend and I am keen to see additional work undertaken in this space under John Elferink’s watch.”

Matt Conlan has been promoted to the Transport and Infrastructure portfolio, while Peter Styles has been promoted to be Minister for Business.

“I am excited about the make-up of this new team and look forward to working with them on behalf of all Territorians.” Mr. Giles said.
