Action is needed to ensure a full field of 24 runners face the starter in the Melbourne Cup.

Shadow Minister for Racing Denis Napthine said it was clearly time for emergency runners to be declared and to be able to replace any horses that withdraw from the Cup between Saturday evening and Tuesday afternoon.

“Again this year there will be a number of fit and well performed horses that will just miss the cut for the final field of 24 Cup runners.” Dr. Napthine said.

Dr. Napthine said the owners and trainers of these unlucky horses would love the opportunity to step into the Cup field if there is a scratching.

“Punters and the large Cup audience also deserve to watch a full field of 24 runners jump from the barriers.” Dr. Napthine said.

“As a veterinarian, I know that a lot can happen to a racehorse between Saturday evening and Tuesday, especially if the horse has run on the Saturday.”

“In addition there is considerable uncertainty about the weather and track conditions which can also affect decisions about whether a horse actually starts in the Cup.”

Dr. Napthine said that in the 21st century we should have the technological capacity to adequately cope with a Melbourne Cup field of 24, with another four horses listed as emergencies for betting and other purposes.

“This year is the 150th running of our great race and time the Melbourne Cup had four official emergencies to guarantee a full field of runners in the race that stops the nation.” Dr. Napthine said
