A Victorian Liberal Nationals Coalition Government will fund another 100 Hospital Beds in an expanded $447.5 Million Redevelopment of Box Hill Hospital, Coalition Leader Ted Baillieu announced today.

“The Coalition will not only build for the needs of families in South-Eastern Melbourne but we will also fix the problems with waiting lists.” Mr. Baillieu said.

“Families in this area have been let down by John Brumby’s failure to invest in vital Health Services.”

The City of Boroondara is expected to grow by at least 16,000 people (9.7%) in the next 20 years, Whitehorse by 7,400 (4.82%), Monash by 16,500 (9.45%) and Manningham by 18,700 (15.91%), while the City of Maroondah is expected to grow by more than 17,700 by 2026.

By 2031, cities such as like Whitehorse, Monash and Manningham are projected to have at least a 10 % increase in the 60 to 69 year old population.

This will substantially increase demand for Health and Hospital services in Melbourne’s Eastern Suburbs.

“The Coalition’s Extra Beds Plan for Box Hill shows we have been listening to local families, in contrast to Premier John Brumby whose only promise is to build half a Hospital at Box Hill.” Mr. Baillieu said.

“Labor’s incompetence in neglecting to plan for population growth in our state has put too much pressure on an ageing and strained Box Hill Hospital, putting the health and wellbeing of local families at risk.”

“The Coalition will honour existing contracts to rebuild this Hospital and add an extra 100 beds to build for future growth.” Mr. Baillieu said.

The Coalition’s commitment to build a new $447.5 Million Box Hill Hospital includes:

  • 100 new beds in addition to the Governments announced capacity, bringing total extra bed capacity to more than 200 beds;
  • New Emergency Facilities with 19 extra cubicles;
  • A new Intensive Care Unit;
  • Six new Operating Theatres;
  • Four Refurbished Theatres;
  • Two new Endoscopy Laboratories;
  • Additional Inpatient Wards;
  • Women’s and Children’s Health Facilities.

Shadow Minister for Health David Davis said Labor has allowed Box Hill Hospital to become run down.

“Labor’s incompetence is revealed in its own hospitals report showing Box Hill Hospital failed six of nine critical benchmarks because of John Brumby’s failure to properly resource this Hospital.” Mr. Davis said.

“The time for talking is over we will build for the future of this region, help local families and fix the problems at Box Hill.” Mr. Davis said.
