  • New Independent Body to Tackle Problem Gambling
  • Largest Problem Gambling Assistance Funding Boost in History

Victorian Liberal Nationals Coalition Leader Ted Baillieu today committed $150 Million to establish and independent body to drastically reduce Victoria’s problem gambling crisis.

Mr. Baillieu said the new body would be modelled on VicHealth, and would be known as the Victorian Responsible Gambling Foundation (VRGF). It would operate under its own Act of Parliament and be responsible to Parliament and the community, rather than being under the control of the Government.

This commitment to the VRGF of $150 Million over four years is a 41 % increase over Labor’s current problem gambling program, and the largest funding boost for problem gambling in Victorian History.

The VRGF will fund the delivery of Problem Gambling Research, Treatment and Communication Services and support advocacy services for local communities alarmed about the proliferation of gambling venues.

“Premier John Brumby has been unable to put his responsibility to reduce problem gambling before his reliance on gambling revenue and is clearly unwilling to manage the conflict between the two.” Mr. Baillieu said.

“I will deal with the conflict by giving a powerful legislative mandate and record funding to an independent body with the job of reducing both the incidence and severity of problem gambling.”

“In the same way that VicHealth has earned the community’s trust and helped to reduce smoking, the VRGF will work to tackle the scourge of problem gambling which damages so many Victorian families.” Mr. Baillieu said.

Shadow Minister for Gaming Michael O’Brien said Labor had always put revenue before responsibility, cutting funding to problem gambling services despite growing evidence of the seriousness of problem gambling in Victoria.

“Victorian families are being torn apart by problem gambling under John Brumby and our plan will provide record funding to reverse the damage caused by this scourge.” Mr. O’Brien said.

“Premier John Brumby and his incompetent Minister have done nothing about the misery and damage caused to Victorian families by problem gambling, and instead they have filled Labor’s coffers with the proceeds over the last 11 years.” Mr. O’Brien said.
