Supporting Bushfire Communities Every Step Of The Way

The Andrews Government is taking further steps to help communities affected by recent bushfires in Victoria to rebuild and recover.

The Government has established a dedicated Cabinet committee, the Disaster Recovery Committee to oversee recovery works when significant disasters occur, including bushfires, floods and storms. This includes implementing recovery programs for the recent bushfires that affected Wye River, Scotsburn and Barnawartha.

“We are committed to providing the support for these communities to rebuild and get through these difficult times over the next few weeks and months ahead.” Treasurer Tim Pallas said.

“Now the Great Ocean Road is back open we will do everything we can to encourage people to visit the Wye River area, spend some money on great produce and experiences, and support the local community.”

The State Government today committed to developing a clean-up plan in consultation with the local communities affected by the Wye River fires, as well as insurers and other tiers of government.

Work will also commence on a regional plan for dealing with the economic impacts of the Wye River fire.

In addition to this, Parks Victoria will employ six seasonal rangers across Anglesea, Lorne and Port Campbell to help assist with an influx of visitors to the region and to enhance the visitor experience.

These commitments are in addition to support already provided by the Government for Great Ocean Road communities, including:

  • 66 emergency relief payments and 1 re-establishment payment with several others under consideration;
  • Landfill levy exemptions for all houses;
  • Cleaning and restoration of water supply for all residents;
  • Support for the relocation of the Falls Festival;
  • Resources and support for local government in the area.

The Committee also discussed recovery work for communities impacted by recent fires in Scotsburn and Barnawartha. Emergency Relief payments have been made to people living in these communities, and assessments of what additional support may be provided are nearly complete.

Government Ministers will continue to visit these communities and Wye River over coming days and weeks to assess what further work is needed.
