The Popularity of Perth’s Hyundai Hopman Cup Mixed Team’s Tennis Tournament continues to grow with this year’s event breaking attendance and television ratings records.

Tourism Minister Kim Hames congratulated Tournament Organiser Paul MacNamee and his staff for staging the best Tournament yet.

“Average session attendance has broken the 7,000 figure for the first time in the event’s history. That’s a tribute to the very high quality of this year’s field, arguably the best ever assembled, which included Grand Slam winners Justine Henin, Lleyton Hewitt, Ana Ivanovic, Novak Djokovic and Francesca Schiavone.” Dr. Hames said.

“Overall attendance was more than 78,000, the highest since the tournament went to an 11 session format four years ago.”

The Minister said the new broadcast deal with Network Ten and ONE HD had proven an outstanding success with 3.6 Million Australians tuning in during the week-long tournament.  That was about a million viewers more than the previous year.

“Credit must also go to Eventscorp for its crucial role in securing a new four-year agreement to keep the Hopman Cup in Perth and the new broadcast deal.” Dr. Hames said.

“Without Eventscorp, the Hopman Cup would almost certainly have been poached by another State or Country.”

According to Network Ten, the most watched session was between number one and three seeds Serbia and Belgium, with a Peak Audience of 831,000.

“The Hopman Cup has cemented itself on the world tennis calendar, and as a premier lead-up event to the Australian Open.” Dr Hames said.

“It remains one of Perth’s favourite sporting events.” Dr. Hames said.
