Minister for Multicultural Affairs and Citizenship Nicholas Kotsiras today launched 2011 AFL Multicultural Week a celebration of cultural diversity and achievement in Australia’s great game.

Multicultural Week features a variety of activities and promotions in the lead-up to a round of AFL games this Friday to Sunday, 15 to 17 July.

“The AFL’s commitment to multiculturalism is a year-round effort and this dedicated Multicultural Week offers fantastic opportunities to promote multicultural initiatives.” Mr. Kotsiras said.

“AFL Multicultural Week celebrates the ability of Australian Rules football to bring together people from diverse backgrounds.”

“The AFL knows that participation in its sport as players, spectators or officials creates greater community engagement and inclusion. It strengthens and celebrates cultural identity and supports the development of participants at all levels of the game.” Mr. Kotsiras said.

The AFL program of events will culminate in a game between North Melbourne and the Western Bulldogs on Sunday 17 July 2011 at Etihad Stadium.

Mr. Kotsiras said the AFL initiative was a significant one.

“It’s about respecting the right of all Victorians to celebrate and share the uniqueness of their cultural origins while upholding the responsibilities that we owe to each other.”

“It’s about being members of a team and it’s about being proud of our commitment to Australia as a nation.”

“The football oval is as good a place as any to look for these enduring values in Action.” Mr. Kotsiras said.

“That’s what we are promoting today and celebrating this week.” Mr. Kotsiras said.
