Attorney-General Robert Clark today announced the appointment of John Champion SC as Acting Director of Public Prosecutions.

Mr. Clark congratulated Mr. Champion, who will serve as Acting DPP until a permanent appointment is made.

“Mr. Champion is highly qualified to serve as Acting Director of Public Prosecutions.” Mr. Clark said.

“He has practised as a barrister for more than 33 years, covering all aspects of criminal law.”

“Mr. Champion has extensive experience appearing for both the prosecution and defence.” Mr. Clark said.

Mr. Champion was admitted to legal practice in 1976 and signed the Victorian Bar Roll in 1977. He was appointed Senior Counsel in 2003.

Mr. Champion has been a member of the Executive Committee of the Criminal Bar Association from 2004 to 2010, including Chairman from 2007 to 2010.

“Mr. Champion’s appointment as in-house Counsel to the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions from 1999 to 2005 gave him a wealth of experience conducting major and complex prosecutions and appeals.” Mr. Clark said

“He has appeared in lengthy and complex trials involving cases of murder, drug trafficking, white collar crime and terrorism, as well as a range of cases before the Court of Appeal.”

“Mr. Champion is an experienced, capable and highly respected practitioner, and I am very pleased that he has agreed to serve the community as Acting DPP.” Mr. Clark said.

The recruitment of a permanent appointee as Director of Public Prosecutions is currently underway, and the Government expects to announce an appointment in the coming months.
