Green Must Act: TFGA Backs Libs Call For Deferred Payment Scheme

Victor P Taffa

The Tasmanian Liberals welcome the Tasmanian Farmers and Graziers Association (TFGA) backing our call to offer a deferred payment model to farmers affected by recent severe weather and flooding.

“Our call for a deferred payment model for farmers involved in a number of the state’s irrigation schemes has been met by deaf ears from Primary Industries Minister Bryan Green.” Shadow Minister for Primary Industries Jeremy Rockliff said today.

“With final payments on a number of irrigation schemes due within the next six months, many farmers will simply not be able to meet their payments. If the Government fails to deliver again, it is likely that farmers will have no choice but to default on payments.”

“The Government must look at a deferred payment model, staggered payments or even assistance in the form of loans to allow farmers to meet their payments.” Mr. Rockliff said.

“Farmers want this Labor-Green Government to understand the true impact of the damage caused by these floods, and deliver genuine help at a grass-roots level.”

“Bryan Green needs to stop playing politics and back the Tasmanian Liberals’ and TFGA’s call and realise that some farmers’ livelihoods are on the line here.”

“It has now been three weeks since the flooding and excessive rain and no doubt the reality of the damage caused is now starting to hit farmers. The Government can no longer ignore this issue.” Mr. Rockliff said.
