Minister for Racing Jeremy Rockliff today launched the $3.5 Million 2017 Luxbet Tasmanian Summer Racing Carnival (TSRC) today and welcome the Devonport Cup to the series.

Tasracing and the host clubs, the Tasmanian Turf Club, the Tasmanian Racing Club and, for the first time in 2017, the Devonport Racing Club, are confident the Carnival will attract strong local and interstate interest.

It is the first year that naming rights partner, Luxbet has partnered with Tasracing and the thoroughbred clubs to host the Carnival one of the state’s true long-term success stories.

Luxbet brand is already aligned with the Tasmanian racing industry given the naming rights it has secured for Elwick, Mowbray and Spreyton.

Tasmanian Summer Racing Carnival generates significant interest in the thoroughbred code but there are other broader benefits, with racing patrons and customers spend more than $10.5 Million on racing, including 35 % of this on retail, fashion and accommodation.

Simons Design Devonport Cup meeting on January 11 is already an important day on the North West Coast summer calendar of events and will receive a huge boost by being included in the Carnival series for the first time.

Tasmanian horses are again expected to feature prominently in the Carnival’s feature races, though it will undoubtedly attract interstate ‘raiders’.

Last year more than 80 % of the Carnival’s stakes were won by Tasmanian horses and only five of the feature races were won by interstate-based horses.

$100,000 bonus for the owner and trainer of any horse that can win both the Luxbet Hobart and Launceston Cups in the one year will again be on offer. The cups double bonus is an excellent initiative that adds an exciting dimension to the carnival’s major races.

Tasmanian Summer Racing Carnival features 92 races over 11 race meetings starting January 6 with the running of the $100,000 Tasmanian Guineas and concluding with the Luxbet Launceston Cup on February 22.

This year’s Luxbet Hobart Cup is on 5 February 2017.
