Darwin’s First Australian Masters Athletics Championships Kicks Off At Marrara

Minister for Tourism and Culture Lauren Moss welcomed athletes to the Australian Masters Athletics Championships 2017 in Darwin.

Minister Moss said that it is the first time the premier master’s athletics competition has been held in the Territory.

“Territory Government continues to bring premier sporting events and games to Darwin providing a boost for Territory lifestyle, which is so important in keeping people living in the Northern Territory.”

“Almost 700 athletes will compete at the event providing a boost for tourism and job creation in the Territory. The success of these championships will provide an opportunity for Athletics Northern Territory to welcome even more national and international events to the Territory in the future.”

“Sport is a way of life in the Northern Territory, forming an important part of our social fabric and I am honoured to welcome these athletes to the Top End.” Minister Moss said.

“Championships provide athletes with the opportunity to compete at our very own international-standard track amongst a wonderful Darwin setting.”

“To all of the athletes who will compete across more than 300 different events, I wish you all the success in the competition ahead.” Minister Moss said.

Territory Government is a proud supporter of the event, which forms part of its commitment to building a vibrant Territory famous for entertainment, sport and rich cultural experiences. 

President of Athletics NT Kevin Mulvahil thanked the Northern Territory Government for its support.

“Having almost 700 entrants to the 2017 NT Athletics Masters Games is exceptional and demonstrates the importance of sport and tourism’s role in promoting the NT.”

“I’m grateful of the support the Northern Territory Government has shown us, along with the many volunteers who have spent the best part of two years planning this event.” Mr. Mulvahil said.

2017 NT Masters Athletics Games runs until 12 June at the Arafura Stadium in the Marrara Sporting Complex. The facility offers an international-standard athletics track, as well as long jump, steeplechase, javelin, seated throws and a netted hammer and discus throw facilities.
