Maryborough Station Returned To Its Former Glory

Victor P Taffa

Minister for Public Transport Terry Mulder today announced the completion of restoration works at the heritage listed Maryborough railway station.

Mr. Mulder said the $1.3 Million heritage works had restored the historic verandah, providing Vline passengers with an upgraded and comfortable platform area.

“With the completion of these works, Maryborough Station is restored to all its former glory, just as Mark Twain would have seen it in 1895.” Mr. Mulder said.

Mr. Mulder said platform verandah works included demolition works, replacement of laminated glass panels, installation of approved heritage corrugated metal roofing and guttering, metal roofing and associated works, glazing and timberwork and painting.

“The heritage works required specialist skilled labour and materials sourced from across the country and were completed under plans approved by Heritage Victoria.” Mr. Mulder said.

“Dedicated skilled tradesman, heritage workers and heritage architects have restored the station to its original plans, designs and heritage colours.”

“This much loved station will continue to be a regional icon and serve future generations of Victorians and visitors.”

Mr. Mulder said the heritage works had taken longer than planned due to the complexity of the works, adverse weather and the difficulty in sourcing heritage approved materials.

The works were funded by the Department of Transport and VicTrack. Lekkas Constructions undertook the works guided by heritage architects RBA Consultants.

Built in 1890, the station is listed as historically and architecturally significant. It houses an antique emporium, café and art gallery and attracts thousands of visitors a year.
