Augusta Gets Going With Ultimate Adventure Race

Victor P Taffa

  • One of the world’s biggest adventure races
  • Course covers 60km in and around Augusta
  • More than 1,700 competitors to visit the South-West

One of the world’s biggest adventure races begins this Sunday in Augusta, taking participants off-road for the nation’s toughest endurance competition.

Tourism Minister Kim Hames said the Anaconda Adventure Race would send individuals and teams on a 1.9km ocean swim; 12.6km trail run; 13km inlet and ocean paddle; and a 32km mountain bike ride.

“Competitors in this well-known race will follow an extraordinary course in and around Augusta where the Indian and Southern oceans meet.” Dr. Hames said.

“From running across rocky terrain and a scenic ocean swim to a gruelling bike ride through tall timber forests – the Anaconda race challenges even the toughest competitors.”

“The 60km race is part of a series of four off-road sporting events held across the nation each year and Augusta is without doubt the most popular of the events.”

The Minister said the State Government, through Eventscorp, was proud to support the Augusta race over the next three years, promoting the region as an exciting adventure holiday destination.

“A 1,700-strong field of local, national and international competitors will descend on our South-West region and experience its stunning coastline and countryside.” Dr. Hames said.

“Augusta’s true wilderness and untouched landscapes will be showcased to audiences around the world through a 26-minute highlights television program.”

Dr. Hames said the local community would enjoy a festival atmosphere with outdoor adventure exhibitions, food stalls and a fun obstacle course and running event – the Anaconda Junior Survivor – in which more than 600 five to 13-year-olds were expected to enter.
