Retail Growth Remains Slow

South Australia Shadow Treasurer Iain Evans

South Australian Retail Sector: Slowest Growth In The Nation

Victor P Taffa

In more bad news – which is becoming never-ending under the State Labor Government – South Australia has experienced the slowest retail sector growth in the nation for the past twelve months.

The ABS Retail Trade August 2011 statistics released today showed SA registered negative retail growth, with turnover falling by 1.1 % (in seasonally adjusted terms) compared to this time last year.

This is in contrast to national retail turnover growing by 2.1 % in the same period.

States such as Queensland and Western Australia also saw retail sector turnover grow 3 % and 8.9 % respectively.

“Other States are experiencing impressive growth in the retail sector turnover but thanks to this high tax State Government, yet again South Australia is lagging behind everyone else.” Shadow Treasurer Iain Evans said.

“Labor’s financial mismanagement has led to struggling families reeling from the soaring cost of utilities and the highest taxes in the nation – some just don’t have the spare cash to spend.”

“The retail sector is suffering just as South Australians are suffering with the financial pressures placed on them by this high-tax, high-spend Labor Government.” Mr. Evans said.
