Victoria Minister for Planning Matthew Guy
Retail Zoning Reforms To Stimulate Economic Development And Jobs Growth
Victor P Taffa
Planning Minister Matthew Guy today announced potential reforms to the definition of the ‘restricted retail’ zoning to include a wider range of retail types and increase economic development.
Mr. Guy made the announcement at the Bulky Goods Retailers Association forum in South Melbourne, saying it would be a common sense reform and remove red tape.
Restricted retail is defined in the planning scheme and includes a limited list of items that may be sold. The potential reforms would mean more items are able to be sold at a ‘restricted retail’ premise.
“These changes go to the very core of the Victorian Coalition Government’s agenda to stimulate growth, jobs and the economy.” Mr. Guy said.
“Where the planning system can improve economic growth, the Coalition Government will continue to make the necessary changes and improvements. Quite often simple changes can make a big difference.”
“These proposed changes are supported by the Productivity Commission’s retail competition report issued this earlier month and could create thousands more jobs in Victoria. They will provide councils with an ability to consider each permit request on its merits.”
“The potential changes will not alter the need for a permit for ‘restricted retail’, but will restore sense, allowing councils to consider a permit on its merit.”
“The Victorian Coalition Government is committed to growing our employment base in many areas, and planning is key to removing the impediments and red tape that can unfortunately choke the system at times.” Mr. Guy said.
