Major New Works Begin As Perth City Link Vision Takes Shape

Another significant milestone has been reached in the Perth City Link project with the start of a $10 Million works program.
Planning Minister John Day said the works included an extension of Milligan Street to provide access to Perth Arena parking and improve connectivity and movement throughout the area.
“These works are the first step in delivering five new connections between the city centre and Northbridge, bringing the two areas together for the first time in more than 100 years and improving pedestrian and vehicle movement.” Mr. Day said.
“The creation of two development sites and new public spaces at the western end of the project area will transform the current industrial site look into a place for the community. It will also help facilitate early delivery of a new hotel to support the Perth Arena.”
The Minister said the new space would incorporate public artworks and water features, conveying a distinctly Australian theme in the choice of materials and tree planting to welcome visitors to Perth’s newest sports and entertainment venue.
“Perth City Link is one of Australia’s most significant infrastructure projects and is an important part in the overall transformation of our city.” Mr. Day said.
“Work to deliver Perth City Link is well under way – earlier this year, demolition of the Perth Entertainment Centre commenced and the State Government awarded a $360million contract for the rail component of the project.”
“By the end of 2011, the Entertainment Centre demolition will be complete making way for a mixed-use development. Major construction works to sink the rail line will also have begun.”
“Perth City Link will inject new life into the city and completely transform the way many people interact with the city.” Mr. Day said.
While the $10 Million works package has created significant employment, the completed Perth City Link is expected to create 13,500 jobs in 244,000sqm of commercial and retail space; provide 1,650 apartments for more than 3,000 new city residents and attract more than $3billion of private investment into Western Australia.
