Education Minister Martin Dixon today celebrated the awarding of the state’s first 5 Star Green Star accreditation for school facilities at Williamstown High School.
“Victorian schools are contributing to the community – not just in terms of improved education outcomes, but also in terms of improved environmental benefits.” Mr Dixon said.
“This acknowledgement by the Green Building Council Australia underpins the Victorian Coalition Government’s commitment to respond to the state’s current and future environmental needs and challenges.”
“While Williamstown High School is the first Victorian government school to receive this prestigious accreditation, there are many other schools that are in the process of incorporating environmentally sustainable features into their existing or new schools.”
The attainment of 5 Star Green Star accreditation means Williamstown High School is recognised for environmental features including:
- Better natural ventilation;
- Wider roof eaves for sun shading;
- Paint finishes and recycled materials that better trap heat and reduce the need to use energy in heating and cooling;
- Roof rainwater collection tanks that are used for toilet flushing and for watering plants;
- The use of solar panels for power and hot water;
- The use of recycled materials;
- Low energy light fittings.
“These new environmental sustainability features will also be used to teach students about the importance of sustainable buildings in order to save energy and water.” Mr. Dixon said.
“The school’s environmental credentials are also a great fit with its unique marine biology programs – located close to the Jawbone Marine Reserve, one of only two sanctuaries in Port Phillip Bay.”
“The 5 Star Green Star accreditation will further support the school in its work to help protect and nourish the natural environment.”
