April Retail Sales Figures Fall

April Retail Sales Figures Fall

Northern Territory Shadow Treasurer Willem Westra van Holthe

The Territory’s April retail sales growth figures were the worst in the country.

Shadow Treasurer Willem Westra van Holthe said the latest Bureau of Statistics figures show the Territory’s seasonally adjusted retail turnover figures fell 0.8% in April from the previous month.

This follows a flat-lining in March and a modest 1.9% increase in February.

“The only light in the tunnel for retailers came during post Christmas sales when there was a 4.2% increase in retail turnover.” Mr. Westra van Holthe said.

“Over the past year, there have been five months of declining retail sales and four months of flat growth.”

“It has been a tough year for retailers as Territory householders have tightened their belts during difficult economic times.” Mr. Westra van Holthe said.
“While the Global Financial Crisis has hit consumer confidence, the Territory’s high cost of living has hit at hip pockets.”

“Record house prices, the country’s highest rents, a 25% hike in power bills, a 60% increase in water charges and the exorbitant cost of groceries have hit household budgets where it hurts.”

“The high Aussie dollar, and its impact on tourism, could threaten any recovery in the retail sector in the short to medium term.” Mr. Westra van Holthe said.

“These factors mean it is even more important for the Territory Government to deliver on promises to buy local and encourage Territorians to do the same.”

“During Estimates, I will ask Government how much it has spent on the ‘Buy Territory’ campaign and whether they are delivering for Territory businesses.” Mr. Westra van Holthe said.
