Tasmania Shadow Minister for Corrections Elise Archer
Another Report, But No Action From Minister

Yet another report has detailed failures to address the safety concerns of correctional officers at Risdon Prison. The Review of Risk Management at the Maximum Security Prison – Rison report reveals that since 2003, there has been a shocking 207 incidents of assaults on correctional officers at the prison – that’s roughly one per fortnight, according to Shadow Minister for Corrections Elise Archer.
“The report also highlighted that the risk controls currently in place were not being fully and consistently implemented, leading to elevated residual risks.” Ms. Archer said.
“Even worse, when questioned in Parliament today, the Minister failed to announce a single measure to combat the problems.”
“Despite continuing to boast about his commitment to providing a safe working environment for correctional officers, Mr. McKim failed to outline whether or not the 31 recommendations made in the report would be implemented.” Ms. Archer said.
“It is simply not good enough for the Minister to seek reports and not act on them, all while the safety of correctional officers continues to be in jeopardy.”
“The simple fact is, if Mr. McKim managed the prison properly, there would not be these issues in the first place. Mr. McKim claims he is “in charge” of Risdon Prison. He must ensure that all staff is safe at work.” Ms. Archer said.
