Victoria Minister for Environment and Climate Change Ryan Smith

First Glimpse Of Concept Plans For The New Arthurs Seat Chairlift

Victor P Taffa

Minister for Environment and Climate Change Ryan Smith has today unveiled concept drawings for the redevelopment of Mornington Peninsula’s Arthurs Seat Chairlift.

“I am pleased to release drawings so the public can get a better sense of the vision planned for this iconic location.” Mr. Smith said.

The consortium on this key project expects to invest an estimated $5 Million into the redevelopment. It anticipates about 100,000 visitors to the site each year.

“Development of a contemporary chairlift will be great for tourism on the Mornington Peninsula.”

“There is enormous anticipation surrounding this project. Arthurs Seat offers one of the great views in Victoria. The new chair lift will take that experience to new heights.”

“Importantly, the project will help to create local jobs, support the local economy and further opportunities for tourism providers.” Mr. Smith said.

Mr. Smith met on-site with Parks Victoria Chief Executive Dr. Bill Jackson and members of the consortium; appointed by Parks Victoria as preferred tenderer and lead by Australian of the Year Simon McKeon.

Simon McKeon, executive chairman of Macquarie Group’s Melbourne Office and an active member of the Mornington Peninsula community, has proposed an all-weather chairlift with a mix of enclosed disability-friendly six-seater gondolas and traditional open chairs.

The consortium is working with Parks Victoria to develop the plans and agreements needed to build a facility that respects the natural environment and delivers a great visitor experience.

“The Coalition Government understands the importance of this project and is pleased with the interim works undertaken by Parks Victoria to improve the park for the local community and visitors who will experience this special view of Melbourne and Port Phillip.” Mr. Smith said.

Public consultation on the proposed development concept will occur later this year. For updates on the development of Arthurs Seat Chairlift contact Parks Victoria on 13 19 63 or visit www.parks.vic.gov.au
