Minister Congratulates Ride2Rescue Youth Volunteers
Victor P Taffa
Minister for Youth Ryan Smith today endorsed the work of ride2rescue youth volunteers as they prepared to ride 25,000km to raise awareness about child trafficking.
Every year 1.2 Million children around the world are trafficked. These young people are sold into slavery, hazardous labour, combat and prostitution.
“All young people should have an opportunity to a childhood that is free from fear. Children sold into trafficking do not have the same opportunities to go to school, access healthcare or create pathways to employment that many young Victorians enjoy.”
“I congratulate the ride2rescue youth volunteers who are taking action to address youth Injustice.” Mr. Smith said.
The ride2rescue program seeks to raise awareness among other young people, particularly those involved in sporting clubs. It also seeks to raise funds to protect children at risk of trafficking and provide opportunities for rehabilitation to children that are able to escape this abuse.
Ride2rescue organiser Tim Holman, a 24-year-old Victorian, said he hoped the trip would help young people think about child trafficking and question where they source their products.
“Sweat shops, child prostitution and slavery exist. We want other young people to get involved in the cause – visiting our website www.ride2rescue.org and signing a petition called ‘don’t trade lives’ is a good start.”
“There are many other ways to become involved with ride2rescue, from fundraising to riding with us as we journey from London to Melbourne over 15 months.” Mr. Holman said.
“I encourage young people to join in the team’s journey and sign up to the ride2rescue facebook page as well as visit www.youthcentral.vic.gov.au” Mr. Smith said.
The ride2rescue volunteers will commence their journey from London on 1 May. For more information visit www.ride2rescue.vic.gov.au or www.youthcentral.vic.gov.au
