The State Government has approved a vital road link from the Kwinana Freeway to Rockingham’s city centre which will improve access to the region’s commercial and industrial areas.
During a visit to the site today, Planning Minister John Day said he had approved a modified alignment for the extension of Mundijong Road.
“Currently there is no direct access to Rockingham from the Kwinana Freeway, with access either via Thomas Road from the north or Safety Bay Road from the south.” Mr. Day said.
“The owners of the Kwinana Nickel Refinery raised concerns about the proximity of the initial proposed alignment to the refinery’s settlement ponds and requested consideration are given to maintaining a greater buffer between the road and the ponds.”
“Following independent expert evaluation, I can confirm a revised alignment will now take a short section of the road around 200 Metres South to accommodate the buffer.”
The Minister said the WA Planning Commission, Rockingham Kwinana Development Office (RKDO) and the City of Rockingham were instrumental in progressing plans for the extension.
“In particular, it is important to acknowledge RKDO chairman and South Metropolitan Region MLC Phil Edman, who has been a driving force behind this project, as well as several other projects contributing to the revitalisation of this growing community.” Mr. Day said.

“The extended Mundijong Road will be important for key revitalisation projects in the region and provide access to the Kwinana Industrial Area, Garden Island Naval Base and Future Port.”
More than $6 Million in Federal Funding has been secured by the City of Rockingham to help build the Five-Kilometre Extension of Mundijong Road connecting the Kwinana Freeway, from the Baldivis Road Exit, to Mandurah and Dixon Roads.
Following the required approvals and satisfactory completion of negotiations with land owners, the extension is expected to be completed in 2012.
Mr. Day also announced important progress towards further improvements to Mundijong Road between the Freeway and South West Highway.
“The WA Planning Commission has purchased the necessary land to enable sections of Mundijong Road to be upgraded to enhance its capacity to carry additional traffic.” the Minister said.
“These improvements will see Mundijong Road become much safer as it is becoming a major East-West Route across the Southern Metropolitan Area.”
