Household Goods drive Retail Trade up 0.2% in June 2010

The latest ABS Retail Trade figures show that retail sales increased 0.2% in June, seasonally adjusted, compared with an increase of 0.2% the previous month.
Household Goods Retailing (1.3%) recorded the largest seasonally adjusted increase in June followed by Department Stores (0.6%), Cafes, Restaurants & Takeaway Food Services (0.6%) and Other Retailing (0.3%). Sales in Clothing, Footwear and Other Personal Accessory Retailing (-1.2%) decreased in June after a strong result in May and Food Retailing (-0.3%) also recorded a small decrease in sales.
Victoria (0.6%) the Australian Capital Territory (0.5%) and New South Wales (0.4%) recorded the largest seasonally adjusted increases in June, followed by the Northern Territory (0.2%). Queensland (0.0%) and Western Australia (0.0%) both remained unchanged in June. Sales in South Australia (-1.0%) and Tasmania (-0.9%) both decreased in June.
Trend turnover increased 0.3% in June 2010. This follows a 0.2% increase in both May 2010 and April 2010. In the twelve months to June 2010 trend turnover increased 3.2%
Turnover volume increased 0.8%, seasonally adjusted, in the three months to June 2010.

CURRENT PRICES
- The trend estimate increased 0.3% in June 2010. This follows a 0.2% increase in May 2010 and a 0.2% increase in April 2010.
- The seasonally adjusted estimate increased 0.2% in June 2010. This follows a 0.2% increase in May 2010 and a 0.6% increase in April 2010.
- In trend terms, Australian turnover increased 3.2% in June 2010 compared with June 2009.
- The following industries increased in trend terms in June 2010: Food retailing (0.4%), Clothing, footwear and personal accessory retailing (0.4%), Household goods retailing (0.3%), Cafes, restaurants and takeaway food services (0.3%) and Other Retailing (0.1%). Department stores (-0.1%) decreased in June 2010.
- The following states and territories increased in trend terms in June 2010: Victoria (0.5%), South Australia (0.5%), Northern Territory (0.5), New South Wales (0.2%), Queensland (0.1%). Tasmania (0.0%) and Australian Capital Territory (0.0%) remained unchanged. Western Australia (-0.1%) decreased in June 2010.
VOLUME MEASURES
- The trend estimate of turnover for the Australian Retail series increased 0.5% in the June quarter 2010 in volume terms.
