$3 Million For Completion of Nannup to Albany Bike Trail

Western Australia Minister for Environment Donna Faragher

$15,000 to ‘Get on Your Bike’

Victor P Taffa

Mountain Bike Riders will have the opportunity to take part in a range of activities during the next six months through an innovative program organised by the Munda Biddi Trail Foundation.

Environment Minister Donna Faragher said she had provided $15,000 to the foundation through the State Government’s Environmental Community Grants program to educate people on the sustainable use of natural areas.

“The Munda Biddi Trail already extends from Mundaring to Nannup and the Liberal-National Government has provided a further $3 Million through the Royalties for Regions Program to complete the section from Nannup to Albany by the end of 2012.” Mrs. Faragher said.

“When it is finished, the 1,000km off-road cycling trail will be one of the great bike rides of the world. Already it is one of the South-West’s most popular attractions, making the National Geographic list of Top 10 cycle routes in the world.”

“It is estimated that 22,000 international, interstate and WA-based cyclists use the trail each year, spending more than $100 a day on accommodation, fuel, food, supplies and equipment.” Mrs. Faragher said.

“Within three years, 25,000 people a year will be using the trail, injecting about $13 Million into the State’s economy.”

The Minister said the $15,000 would allow the Munda Biddi Trail Foundation to organise a series of recreational trail-based activities to cater for all cycling abilities.

“Different ride operations will be offered along with educational activities such as a beginners’ clinic, mechanics’ clinic and a course for ride guides.” the Minister said.

“In particular, the program is aimed at a wide variety of people, families and seniors who may not currently be mountain bikers.”

Mrs. Faragher said the project would also focus on delivering benefits to the regional communities through which the trail passes.

“Camping facilities are provided at 40km intervals and the trail passes through many communities where cyclists can restock supplies.” the Minister said.

The project is one of 139 being funded through the Environmental Community Grants program in 2010-11. The State Government has allocated $6 Million across four years for the program.
