Art Gallery To Show The Work Of WA’s Best Student Artists

Graduating West Australian High School Artists will have their work displayed at the Art Gallery of Western Australia as the 18th Annual ‘Year 12 Perspectives’ Exhibition Opens.

Culture and the Arts Minister John Day said the Exhibition had been one of the Gallery’s most Popular Events.

“The Exhibition’s Popularity is an indication of the outstanding creative and technical achievements of the State’s Visual Art Graduates.” Mr. Day said.

“Being chosen by an esteemed judging panel, from numerous entrants across the State, is truly a commendable achievement for any artist.”

“I encourage everyone to visit this exhibition and vote in the People’s Choice award when they visit the gallery. They can also vote on Facebook.” Mr. Day said.

Education Minister Liz Constable attended the launch on Friday night and awarded Melissa Simonds of Kingsley with the Packer’s Prize, voted by the Gallery’s installation team.

“I would like to congratulate Melissa on catching the eye of the installers with her work ‘Material Girl’ it is a wonderful achievement.” Dr. Constable said.

“This exhibition not only represented the talents and creativity of year 12 students, but highlighted the strength of the art curriculum throughout WA schools.”

“This year, we have a new Visual Arts syllabus and I am delighted to see this change providing year 12 students with more freedom and creativity to experiment with emerging technologies.”

“Works by young artists from across the State have been carefully selected by an esteemed judging panel with representatives from WA’s Art Education Association; Curriculum Council; Department of Education; and the Art Gallery of WA’s Exhibition Curator.” Dr. Constable said.

The ‘Year 12 Perspectives’ project also features an exchange that sees selected pieces by Japanese high school graduates alongside work by the WA student artists. This exchange is supported by a partnership with the International Foundation for Arts and Culture.

‘Year 12 Perspectives 2010’ is on display at the Art Gallery of Western Australia until July 15, 2011.
